Writer and Activist

I see myself as a voice for students and teachers. I spent more than 20 years teaching in public schools, and I saw firsthand how one reform solution after another failed to fix many of the persistent problems in public education, like the achievement gap between affluent students and those living in poverty. Most reform efforts lack continuity. They are often touted by those with little practical experience in the classroom, and they fail to take into account the many factors that affect academic performance.

In my book, Education . . . for All, I share what I learned over those years and identify the seven major influences on learning and how they interact to shape a student’s journey through the education system. My goal is to uncloak the reality of day-to-day life inside American schools, share ideas on reform based on years of experience, and empower readers to demand high-quality equitable education for all students.

I hope to spark a deeper, more informed conversation about public education by providing a holistic view of what happens in schools. Then we can be proactive and create an education system that provides a foundation for all students to have opportunities for finding their true callings as adults.
